Chapter 1 – Her Arrival

Lily stood just past the threshold, the echo of her own words still alive in her chest.

I choose this.

The door closed behind her with a quiet click.

Her breath caught. The confidence she’d carried from the hall disappeared as soon as she heard the latch close.

The apartment felt different than before. Not the same place she had crossed into a few weeks ago, stumbling, afraid.

Tonight the air seemed sharper, charged—as if her choice had rewired the space around her. He seemed different too. Or maybe it was her, seeing him through the choice she had made at his door.

Her hands trembled faintly, so small she hoped he didn’t see.

Blake’s gaze held hers, unflinching.

“You’re nervous.”

The words weren’t cruel, only true.

Her throat tightened. “I… I’m not sure why.”

“Good,” he said, his voice low, even. “Nerves mean you understand what this is.”

She smiled faintly at him, his words easing her nerves only slightly. The silence that followed pressed heavier than his words. It felt different now — sharper, more alive.

His eyes drifted over her, sharp but unreadable.

“You didn’t bring anything.”

She shook her head quickly. “No, Sir.”

Her palm pressed against the envelope in her pocket confident that’s what he had told her to do. She had read the note a dozen times since dawn.

“You told me not to. I hoped that was right.”

Blake inclined his head. “It was. You did well.”

He stepped closer, his presence deliberate, steady.

“You came with nothing. That matters. Everything here will be new. Not carried from your old life.”

His voice softened, but not in warmth—only in weight. “We build this together.”

Her fingers tightened at her sides. The words sank deep, not a promise she’d been given before, but one she was now bound to. She swallowed, steadying herself under his gaze.

Blake stepped aside, motioning with the barest tilt of his hand. “Come.”

He walked ahead, unhurried, not looking back. He didn’t need to. His stillness was command enough, drawing her forward as though the gravity in the room had shifted around him.

Her legs trembled as she obeyed.

Blake stopped at the edge of the hall, at the guest room doorway. He didn’t speak right away, only held her in the steady line of his gaze.

He pushed the door open and motioned for her to enter.
